The packaging claims it's "The most beautiful Puzzle Bobble yet!," and that's no lie. Graphically, the game looks very clean - the entire game has been redone in high resolution, and supports the VGA box to boot. This can create a massive chain reaction that turns the tables with spectacular results - and it brings the game's versus mode up to the level of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. The biggest addition are the new chain bubbles, which relocate destroyed bubbles to other locations in the puzzle. (My personal favorite is Debirun, who appears to be the offspring of Bub and Satan.) Each character features different counter-bubbles when playing in the game's versus modes, and have different tales in the story mode. The cast of Puzzle Bobble 4 features Bob and Bub from the original Bubble Bobble, along with a truckload of undeniably cute characters. After every few seconds, the clusters of bubbles start to drop - if they reach the bottom of the screen, it's game over for you, pal. If three bubbles of the same color are adjacent to each other, they pop, along with any bubbles that are hanging below. If you've never played Puzzle Bobble, the rules are simple: there are a bunch of multi-colored bubbles clustered together at the top of the screen, and you must pop them with your bubble-launching device.

Fortunately, all is well, and Puzzle Bobble 4 has already managed to start sucking away at my precious time ever since I cracked the shrinkwrap two hours ago. C'mon folks, how much work is it to add a simple link-up mode, especially in light of the existing vs.After the latest batch of botched ports ( Virtua Cop 2, cough cough), I was skeptical as to whether or not this WinCE-based conversion would be worth the GD it was printed on. Sadly, everyone's favorite "bakaaaaak!" sound is nowhere to be found, and neither is the series' best feature: the multiplayer mode. Music and sound effects are nothing spectacular, but fit the puzzle action just right. As with its console counterparts, BAM 4 displays the franchise's cute characters all throughout the action, working the bubble launching controls toward the bottom of the screen. Developer Crawfish should have realized that it's more important to have recognizable colors for the bubbles than color variety on the characters on screen or the walls. Controls and game speed are spot on, but less than favorable use of color for the bubbles makes them a bit hard to tell apart. Like every other Bust-A-Move game out there, BAM 4 is easy to pick up and highly addictive. Challenge Mode evaluates players based on how well they play and how far they can get.Beating the computer unlocks hidden characters. CPU pits players in 16 split-screen matches against the computer. Puzzle requires you to clear the screen and doesn't depend at all on which one of the classic BAM characters you have selected.Star Bubbles eliminate same color bubbles as the launched one Rainbow Bubbles will change colors Jama-Blocks ("jama" is Japanese for "hindrance") cannot be popped, only dropped Fulcrum Blocks can only be erased if all attached bubbles are eliminated Anti-Gravity Blocks try to float upwards, along with any other bubbles attached to them. In addition to special "Balance Fields", weight scales with pulleys that appear during certain rounds, Bust-A-Move 4 features a number of special bubbles to liven up the gameplay. Once the wall of bubbles reaches the bottom, the game ends. Basically, players launch bubbles from the bottom of the screen to the top and try to align three bubbles of the same color to erase them.

Since Taito published the first title in the series years ago, the gameplay has virtually remained the same. The Bust-A-Move series is definitely not about evolution.
